Would it ruin the story? Again, who knows? It would need to be written and then consumed by a wide audience to discover that. My hypothesis is, if we made just this one, simple change to the first minor theme presented in this story, the story wouldnât have the same âFinding Nemo is one of the best movies everâ feel.
Spend some serious time thinking about the themes of your story â both your major theme, and any and all minor themes you plan to include that will feed the major theme. Because a misstep at this stage can mean the difference between an amazing story, a not-so-amazing story, and an abysmal failure of a story.
Since I love circular writing so much, letâs return to my very first examples â the meteorite destroying the Earth movies. Remember, all three of these movies were nearly identical. Why was one great, one meh, and one a stink-burger? Answer: The writers of one made great decisions concerning the use of their major and minor themes. The writers of the second didnât do as well, but still got some of the job done. And the writers of the third totally missed the point of a story, and through their lack of skill in story creation, missed adding anything that would fulfill those built-in, subconscious expectations audiences have.
It really is that elementary, my dear fledgling writer.
